David, born and raised near Windthorst in SE Saskatchewan, attended high school at Campion College in Regina, University of Saskatchewan and University of Regina. Having been raised on a farm, an appreciation for nature was a vital influence in his desire to investigate painting as a hobby. It naturally followed that the preferred subject material for putting oil to canvas focused on prairie scenes and birds, especially the majestic Canada Goose.
He began painting around 1975, having taken classes from A.W. Davey, Betty Barbour, Christine Lynn, Tom Young, David Butt, Zhong-Yang Huang, Dean Bauche, Jack Reid, Eltje Degenhart, Carl Schlademan, Paul Trottier, Jan Layh, Beth Gaffney and several from Michael Lonechild. His medium of choice was oil until February 2002, at which time a workshop with Michael Lonechild convinced him to try acrylics and he has used acrylics ever since. David was a featured artist in November 1989 at "The Gallery" on the roof of the S.P.C. Building in Regina. He has displayed paintings in Creatisphere as well as many shows in and around Regina. As an avid supporter of Ducks Unlimited, he donated many original paintings to their live auction dinners. David is well-respected in the prairie art community; he is the Past-President of the Prairie Artists Guild and also of the Rosemont Art Gallery in Regina. David's paintings can be found in the USA, New Zealand, Korea, Japan, and Switzerland, as well as in collections across Canada. You can see more samples of his past and current works in the accompanying pages. |
